With the rediscovery and sudden interest in Greek and Roman texts and artworks, humanism—glorification of the human form—was at the heart of the Renaissance. The accessibility and reach of knowledge, technology, and social media in the 21st century has prompted another, different obsession with the human form. Phones give us constant access to an image of ourselves. In these paintings, I use Renaissance oil painting techniques, the Zorn palette (titanium white, ivory black, cadmium red, and yellow ochre), and human models to emulate a historical style, with one update: blue light.
